As much as we love the mountains, driving on snow and ice is a challenge

Winter driving - helping you stay safe not sorry.

06 January, 2026

Yippee, the snow dances are paying off! 💃🕺❄️☃️ It's due to be cold for a couple more days and then......it's snow time!!!!! 🎬

As exciting as that is for all of us who have chosen a mountain life, working for an insurance company we also get to see the downside.

The snow is forecast this weekend when the roads are at their busiest. Many holiday makers will be travelling to and from resort without the equipment or experience of driving on snowy mountain roads.

Without wanting to be all doom & gloom we already know that:

☃️There WILL be those who choose to chance it without chains & who get stuck in the middle of the road.

☃️There WILL be slow moving traffic and traffic build ups.

☃️There WILL be accidents.

Here are a few of our tips to help you say safe out there:

❄️Keep your distance - on snowy & icy roads leave at least double the space that you normally would.

🚗Ensure that you have snowchains AND that you know how to use them. Practice both putting them on and taking them off before the snow arrives!

❄️Slow down - its better to arrive a little late than not arrive at all!

🚗 Avoid sudden movements & sharp turns. Give yourself plenty of room/time and anticipate your manouveures in order that you can break smoothly. Slamming on the breaks is a sure way to slide!

❄️Before any long journey, ensure that your tank is full with fuel suitable for very low temperatures and, that you have warm clothing and a blanket in the boot - breaking down & being forced to stand at the side of the road in freezing temperatures is not fun!

🚗Always keep a copy of your Insurance Memo in your glove box. This document contains all of the insurance details you will need in the case of an accident &, the telephone number of the recovery telephone number.

❄️Even if the person in front of you is driving very slowly, refrain from overtaking unless you are 100% sure that you have the time and space to do so safely!

🚗If you don't have to take to the road then don't. Stay at home or better still, get the skis out! ⛷️🏂🛷
